Science outreach
I’m on the organizing committee for Girls Exploring Math and Science (GEMS), a half-day workshop for middle school students interested in math and science. Since 2001, a group of dedicated professionals have hosted GEMS at the University of South Alabama to provide middle-schoolers with exciting, hands-on experiences in a wide variety of STEM professions. GEMS is a half-day program that includes three hands-on workshops designed to help students experience the fun and excitement that can be found in STEM careers. I usually also present a workshop. In the past I’ve hosted workshops on hand washing, the five second rule, and cupcake chemistry.
The photos are from my cupcake chemistry workshop and a paper airplane competition at the concluding ceremony.
After a two-year hiatus due to COVID GEMS returned in fall of 2022 welcoming boys for the first time. This year GEMS takes place on Saturday, October 21st. Join us for a great day on the USA campus in Mobile.
